Definitions



 Angiotensin Converting Enzyme Inhibitors (ACEI) Medicines used to treat heart attacks, heart failure, or a decreased function of the heart.
 Angiotensin Receptor Blockers (ARB) Medicines used to treat heart attacks, heart failure, or a decreased function of the heart.
 Antibiotic Antibiotics are medicines that treat infection, and each one is different. Patients should receive the antibiotics that best treat the infection type for each pneumonia patient.
 Appropriate Care Measure (ACM) A composite measure that captures whether a patient received all the care he or she was eligible to receive based on the applicable measures being publicly reported.  The ACM is a total patient level score versus scores for the individual indicators.  Patients eligible for at least one metric are counted once in the denominator.  Patients meeting all metrics for which they are eligible are counted once in the numerator, but are not counted if any measure is missed.
 Beta Blocker Type of medicine used to lower blood pressure, treat chest pain (angina) and heart failure, and to help prevent a heart attack.
 Blood Culture A blood culture tells what kind of medicine will work best to treat your pneumonia.
 Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) HCAHPS is a standardized survey instrument and data collection methodology for measuring and publicly reporting patients’ perspectives of hospital care.  The survey measures results of patient interaction with doctors, nurses, and hospital staff; cleanliness of the organization; pain control; communication about medicines; and discharge information.
